"Few people realize the tremendous connection between the eyes and general health. So whenever I conduct an eye exam, I explain the purpose of each test and the patient's prognosis. I'll inquire about other factors, such as allergies, illnesses or medications, that could have an effect on my patients' vision. I often hear my patients say, `I've never had such a thorough eye exam.' I just want my patients to benefit from the best eye care available."

Over two decades of eye-care expertise.

"I became an optometrist not only because I wanted to help people with their vision problems, but because I find eye care truly fascinating. After over 24 years as an eye-care professional, I still enjoy solving tough cases and making people happy. I've found the best thing I can do for my patients is to really take the time to listen to them and fully explain all of their options. Then, together, we can choose the solution that best fits their work demands and overall lifestyle."

Professional commitment.

"My patients trust me to provide a high level of care. So I attend many general medical seminars yearly. Sometimes it takes someone outside the profession to remind us of what patients really want. We use each other as sounding boards and help one another continue to provide the kind of care patients want and deserve."

Making an impact on people's lives.

"I've always been a person who enjoys problem-solving and striving for excellence. But I knew early in my studies that I also wanted to do something that would make a positive impact on other people's lives. That's why I chose medicine. I get tremendous satisfaction seeing the difference I make in my patients' lives each day, especially the hard-to-fit cases."

Vision Wellness:  Focus on Your Vision Health

Eighty percent of the world's blindness is preventable, according to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, so early detection of vision problems is critical to vision health. The leading causes of irreversible blindness - glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and muscular degeneration - advance without pain or other symptoms in their earliest stages.

Here are some more vision health facts:

  • More than 1 million Americans aged 40 and older are blind and another 2.4 million are visually impaired. This number could double in the next 30 years as the Baby Boomers age.
  • On a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the worst thing that can happen to you, more than 70 percent of Americans reported loss of eyesight as a "10" because it can also mean loss of independence, mobility and quality of life.
  • More than 75 percent of U.S. residents between the ages of 25 and 64 use some sort of vision correction.
  • Vision problems in adults cost an estimated $51.4 billion in the United States (including costs to the individuals, costs to their caregivers, and the impact on the U.S. economy.)
  • One out of every four school-aged children has an undiagnosed vision problem that can interfere with learning.
  • After medical insurance, vision coverage is one of the top five most-desired benefits for employees.
  • Vision health can impact your overall health, too. Eye exams can detect symptoms of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
